The DAAD Africa Scholarship aims to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from the African continent at higher education institutions in Germany.

The German Government aims to support qualified African students to pursue their postgraduate degrees in Germany on a fully funded scholarship.

As a beneficiary of the DAAD Africa Scholarship, you will enjoy a tuition-free study, €11,208 in living stipends, free accommodation, travel cost coverage, and a separate stipend to support your dependents (children or spouse). The DAAD Africa Scholarship program, “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) aims to support the academic qualification and advancement of young refugees and national scholars from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda at higher education institutions in Germany.

In times of conflict and displacement in various African countries, this program intends to contribute to the education of future leaders, who will be essential for the further development of their home countries.

‘Leadership for Africa’ awards scholarships to study master’s degrees in Germany to qualified applicants in any field of study except medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, art, and architecture.

All Leadership for Africa Fellows benefit from complementary training programs in good governance, civil society and career development. Must complete a required program in addition to regular studies.

DAAD Africa Scholarship Requirements:

To be eligible for the DAAD Scholarship, you must:

  • At the time of application, you must have a bachelor’s degree that meets the requirements for admission to a master’s program at a German university.
  • Prerequisite is a bachelor’s degree in at least two upper-level classes.
  • As a general rule, no more than 6 years have passed since your last degree (see Important information for scholarship holders / Section A, point 2) )
  • Good English or German
  • For refugees: Copy of refugee ID card issued before April 3, 2023.
